All You Need to Know About Ovarian Cysts

Ovarian cysts are sacs filled with fluid found in or on the exterior of your ovary. They are very common among pregnant women or women yet to experience menopause. In most cases, ovarian cysts cause little to no discomfort in your body, and they are also harmless and painless. Most women usually develop ovarian cysts at least once a month during their menstrual cycles and often do not notice them.

They sometimes can go away alone without medical treatment or result in adverse health symptoms when they burst open or become twisted. Ovarian cysts can become more painful if they increase in size and become persistent. It is often advisable to seek regular pelvic examinations by your provider for early detection of ovarian cysts. In this article, we will look at the possible treatments for Garden City ovarian cysts.

Types of Ovarian Cysts

Generally, ovarian cysts can be grouped into two main types that include; functional and pathological ovarian cysts. Functional cysts usually occur during your menstrual cycle and are not cancerous, while pathological cysts are not linked to the menstrual cycle but are cancerous. Below are some of the other different types of ovarian cysts:

·       Dermoid cysts. These cysts grow from the cells present during birth and can be found anywhere in your body, such as the ovaries.

·       Corpus luteum cysts. These cysts form when the sac that produced the egg fails to shrink normally and becomes filled with fluid. Such cysts can grow to about four inches wide but often fade away in weeks.

·       Follicle cysts. These cysts form when the sac fails to release an egg during the menstrual cycle. They are very common and do not exhibit any symptoms.

·       Cystadenomas. These are water-filled cysts that form in the ovaries.

·       Ovarian cancer. This is a very rare type of ovarian cyst that is cancerous.

·       Endometriomas. These cysts form when the endometrial-like tissue is formed outside the uterus, causing pain during sex and menstruation.

What are the Symptoms of Ovarian Cysts?

As explained earlier, it is hard to notice any symptoms of ovarian cysts, but they can sometimes be seen when the cysts become persistent or grow big. These symptoms usually indicate a twisted or ruptured ovarian cyst and, if left unchecked, can lead to severe health complications. The following are some of the common symptoms of ovarian cysts:

·       Vomiting and nausea

·       Pain during intercourse

·       Painful bowel movements

·       Breast tenderness

·       Irregular swelling or bloating

·       Sharp, persistent pelvic pain

·       Fever

·       Abnormal pain in the thighs or lower back

·       Dizziness

·       Difficulty in breathing

 Treatment

Mild cases of ovarian cysts tend to disappear on their own. Your practitioner may decide to use pain-relieving medications to help manage the symptoms. You may be given birth control medications that will not make the pre-existing cysts fade away but effectively prevent the growth of new ones. Severe cases of ovarian cysts usually require surgical treatments. Your doctor can also recommend surgery if you are about to experience menopause because, at this stage, ovarian cysts are highly cancerous. During your surgical procedure, your surgeon may decide to get rid of the cysts or remove your ovary.
